Abstract

Violations of religion and belief freedom have increased significantly. These facts show that the intolerance issue, caused violence of religion, discrimination, anarchism, destruction of worship places and sealing worship places in Indonesia has not been ended. The teacher’s role in maximizing the tolerance value towards students is one of the important factors in determining the future of tolerance in Indonesia. Strengthening and the future of tolerance have a strong foundation by returning to the Pancasila values. The Indonesian people tolerance attitude in the future will be determined by how strong the teacher and curriculum are able to develop the students’ tolerance value; family education also underlies the childern attitude which they bring in social interactions with the environment. Besides, educational institutions play a strategic role in building a culture of peace, so they need to be designed to become peace building institutions provided various educational programs that foster a lot of experience in building peace and conflict management, so that the teacher role becomes important and strategic as well. Systematic and continuous efforts are needed so that teachers in educational institutions are able to develop and convey character values that prioritize aspects of developing students’ self-concepts that are more open and tolerant to other parties.
